‘Life Long Song’ is a service offering a musical experience to the community focusing on the Third and Fourth Age. We believe that there is a great need for initiatives that support the well-being and productivity of older people. We aim to draw people together to experience all aspects of shared music-making and singing. Within the framework we have developed of musical activity and communication, many immediate benefits are realised. These are social, emotional, physiological and cognitive.
Participants are seated in a circle where they are able to move, communicate, listen, watch and respond. There are warm-up songs, a welcome song, responses encouraged to interesting recorded music, appropriate and meaningful use of instruments and sound makers to fit with a song or recording, all adding enjoyment. Activities might include the use of stimulating props (scarves, ribbons, parachutes etc.)
Ali and Janet work together to ensure pace and awareness of the needs and skills of the group. With this level of mutual support it is possible to develop part work, both instrumental and vocal. Music enables, enriches and energises.
